Call for Proposals
Workshop Description
Following its launch in 2021, this workshop seeks to gather fresh insights into employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems and intelligent tutors for education and learning through the use of multimodal data sources. The Multimodal Artificial Intelligence in Education (MAIEd) workshop builds upon the CrossMMLA workshop series at the Learning Analytics & Knowledge Conference and the Multimodal Immersive Learning Systems (MILeS) at the European Conference of Technology Enhanced Learning. The MAIEd workshop calls for new empirical studies, even if they are in their early stages of development. It welcomes novel experimental designs, theoretical contributions, and practical demonstrations that can prove the use of multimodal and multisensor devices “beyond mouse and keyboard” in learning contexts for automatic feedback generation, adaptation, and personalisation in learning. Through a call for proposals, we seek to engage the scientific community in opening up the scope of AI in Education towards novel and diverse data sources.
Topics of Interest
At the MAIEd workshop, we want to discuss which scientific, state-of-the-art ideas and approaches are being pursued and what impacts we expect on educational technologies and education. We are especially interested in contributions targeting the intersection of AI and multimodal interaction. We are looking for original contributions that advance the state of the art in theories, technologies, methods, and knowledge towards developing multimodal intelligent tutors. Concrete topics of interest for this year’s MAIEd workshop include, but are not limited to:
- Multimodal AI architectures and systems
- Multimodal intelligent tutoring systems or user interfaces
- AI multimodal architectures and scalable strategies
- Multimodal learner modeling and affective computing
- Adaptive feedback, guidance, and process in multimodal learning
- Artificial intelligence for learning analytics
- AI in professional and workplace learning
- Multimodal learning environments
- Multimodality in augmented, virtual, and mixed reality
- Multimodal AI for embodied learning environments
- Multimodal AI in narrative-centered learning environments
- Collaborative learning and AI-driven group interaction analysis
- Methods and technical challenges
- Big data-driven visual analytics for learning
- Multimodal data fusion and cross-modal learning in AI tutors
- Error detection and classification for multimodal data
- Cognitive load in multimodal interaction with intelligent tutoring systems
- Explainability, trust, and safety in multimodal intelligent tutoring systems
- Bias, fairness, and ethical AI in multimodal learning
In addition, and in line with the AIED 2025 conference theme, we aim to critically examine and reflect on issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in MAIEd. This includes exploring how MAIEd technologies can support diverse learners, address biases, and promote fair and accessible learning opportunities for all.
